USA - Louisiana. A jury sentenced Robert Coleman, 41, black, to death
1 MIN READ
A Caddo Parish jury recommended that Robert Coleman, 41, black, be sentenced to die in the Jan. 1, 2003 killing of Julian Brandon, 70, during a home invasion and robbery that also left his wife shot and critically wounded. Coleman and his girlfriend, Brandy Holmes were convicted of that murder in separate trials, and both were sentenced to the death penalty. Colemann was sentenced to death the first time on Feb. 19, 2005 (see), and Holmes on Feb. 16, 2006 (see). Although Holmes' conviction and sentence were upheld by the Louisiana Supreme Court, Coleman's conviction was overturned by the state's highest court on Nov. 2, 2007 (see) on the grounds that his rights were violated because prosecutors dismissed a black juror on racial grounds. The case was remanded back to Caddo District Court for a new trial. Today the jury came out with a new death sentence. Caddo District Judge Michael A. Pitman presided over the new trial.
