In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has denied death-row prisoner Russell Bucklew's challenge to Missouri's lethal-injection protocol. Bucklew, who has a rare medical condition that has caused blood-filled tumors to grow on his neck and throat, argued that lethal injection would be cruel and unusual punishment in his case because of the risk that the tumors will burst and he will suffocate and drown in his own blood.
