USA - Nebraska. Carey Dean Moore was executed

Carey Dean Moore was executed today, the first execution in the state since 1997.  He also became the first person in America executed using Fentanyl. Moore, 60, White, was sentenced to death in 1980 for the August 1979 murders of Reuel Van Ness Jr. and Maynard Helgeland, two cab-drivers in Omaha. Both were 47 years old. Moore was 22 at the time. In his prison writings, he characterized the shooting as accidental. But his second murder was not. “I had to foolishly prove to myself that I could take a man's life all by myself,” Moore wrote. “I entered another cab, and when he stopped at my destination I shot three bullets into this second man, right in his head.” This was Maynard Helgeland. As he appealed his death sentence, Moore eventually became Nebraska’s longest-serving death row prisoner. In May 2018, Moore formally asked the Nebraska Supreme Court to allow him to stop appealing his death sentence, in effect paving the way for his execution later in the summer. Moore becomes the 1st person to be executed this year in Nebraska, the 4th since the state resumed executions in 1994, the 1st since Nebraska abolished death penalty in 2015 then reintroduced it in 2016. Moore becomes the 16th person executed this year in the Usa, and the  1481st since Usa resumed executions in 1977.
