Filibuster Kills Death Penalty Repeal Bill (LB 543). Nebraska lawmakers hoping to repeal Nebraska's death penalty have failed to overcome a filibuster by senators opposed to the repeal. The Unicameral voted 28-21 to invoke cloture and end debate, but the vote needed 33 to pass. That effectively kills LB 543 for this session. Senator Ernie Chambers, of Omaha, has attempted to repeal the death penalty in Nebraska more than 30 times and vows to bring the measure back again next session. The bill would have replaced the death penalty with life imprisonment without parole.
