Nebraska's 3 Catholic bishops are calling for repeal of the death penalty in Nebraska. The bishops said in a statement released today that the death penalty is not necessary in Nebraska and that the "purposes of a criminal justice system are rehabilitation, deterrence, public safety and the restoration of justice." A Nebraska legislative committee last week advanced a bill that would replace capital punishment with life imprisonment. The vote was 8-0, the 1st time a repeal bill advanced unanimously from the Judiciary Committee.
