31 years after he was initially sentenced to death, a Clark County jury resentenced John Valerio, 52, White, to life imprisonment. Valerio had won a new sentencing hearing after a federal appeals court ruled that his trial jury had been unconstitutionally instructed about the aggravating circumstances alleged to have been present in his case. Valerio was convicted in 1988 and placed on death row for fatally stabbing Karen Sue Blackwell, a 26-year-old Las Vegas woman, at least 45 times in September 1986.
