Death is one of the issues expected to dominate the 2014 legislative session. Death penalty repeal advocates are hoping a sympathetic Gov. Maggie Hassan will help win support to strip capital punishment from the state's books. Lawmakers voted to repeal the law in 2000, but then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen vetoed the bill. The Senate is the key to repealing the state's death penalty. Supporters believe they can win passage in the Democrat-controlled House, but the repeal bill's fate is less clear in the Senate. "This is a really hard issue," said state Rep. Renny Cushing, the bill's prime sponsor. If the law is repealed, it wouldn't affect the status of Michael Addison, who was convicted of killing a police officer in 2006 and is the only person on death row.
