Joe D'Ambrosio, who spent 20 years on Ohio's death row, has been released pending a new trial. D'Ambrosio, 48, walked out of the Cuyahoga County jail in Cleveland today. D'Ambrosio was convicted of murdering 19-year-old Tony Klann in 1988. But in 2006, a federal judge ruled that prosecutors withheld from D'Ambrosio and his attorneys 10 key pieces of evidence that might have exonerated him. A new trial is scheduled to start May 4. Last week, a judge set bond at 10 % of $50,000 and agreed to allow D'Ambrosio to live with a woman who befriended him while he was in prison. (see also 25/03/2006 and 05/06/2008, 24/02/2009).
