Jury recommends death for Derrick Laday, 28, Black, in a 2015 murder case in which the victim’s body was moved and burned. last week jurors found Laday guilty of four charges, including first-degree murder, in the stabbing death of Dennis Johnson Jr., 34, then burning the victim’s body. Oklahoma County District Court Judge Richard W. Kirby read the jury’s unanimous death penalty recommendation. Formal sentencing will take place within 60 days. The body of Johnson was found June 12, 2015 after Ada firefighters extinguished a fire. The case involved 7 other defendants — including Laday’s brother and girlfriend — who pleaded guilty to a range of lesser charges and received various levels of punishment.
