Timothy Shaun Stemple, 47, white, was executed. Stemple killed his wife Tricia Stemple, 30, on October 24, 1996 in order to collect nearly $1 million in insurance benefits. His plan to cash in on her death unraveled quickly at his trial the following year, when his 16-year-old new girlfriend testified he was promised a share of the insurance benefits to help in the killing. The teenager was spared a possible death penalty in exchange for testifying for the prosecution and is serving a life prison term. Stemple is the second man executed in Oklahoma this year and the 98th person since the state resumed capital punishment in 1990, the 9th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1286th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
