Death sentence vacated for Salvador Carlos Santiago. Santiago will now spend life in prison after Judge Jeffrey A. Manning agreed to vacate his death sentence this morning. Santiago was convicted of robbing and killing Patrick Huber on Jan. 17, 1985. Santiago was sentenced in 1985 to die. His execution was delayed by numerous appeals. After his death warrant was signed in 2004, Mr. Santiago took his case to federal court. Eventually, the prosecution agreed to drop the death penalty to end the appeal.
