A Shelby County jury sentenced James Hawkins, 33, black, to death. Hawkins was found guilty yesterday for 1st degree murder in the Feb. 9, 2008 death of Charlene Gaither, 28, black. His daughter with Gaither, who was 12-years old at the time, testified that she was forced to help cut up and dispose of the body. She also testified that she was repeatedly raped by Hawkins, and was threatened by him if she reported the abuse. Hawkins is still awaiting trial on charges of child rape.
