Lawrence Brewer, 44, white, was executed. Brewer, a white supremacist, had been sentenced to death in 1999 for the infamous dragging death slaying of James Byrd, a black man. Byrd, 49, was chained to the back of a pickup truck and pulled whip-like to his death along a bumpy asphalt road in one of the most grisly hate crime murders in recent Texas history. It was June 7, 1998. Brewer, was asked if he had any final words, to which he replied: "No. I have no final statement." He was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m.. Brewer becomes the 11th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas and the 475th overall since the state resumed executions in 1982. Brewer becomes the 34th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1268th overall since executions resumed on January 17, 1977.
