For $20, a Toronto artist delivers a taste of death row. Toronto artist Paul Kneale has created a “Last Meals Delivery Service”. For $20, and given a few days' notice, he will deliver an item-for-item re-creation of a condemned man's last meal. The drop-off also containes two paper masks (random mug shots from a Nevada police website) and a plastic bag filled with ash; free prizes in an unhappy meal. "What somebody had for their last meal was always included in the news report of an execution," the 24-year-old artist says, "and I was thinking that it was completely extraneous information, which it is. Completely and totally useless. "But obviously you publish things you think people want to know about. It seemed to be a media expression of a popular desire. So I wanted to explore that popular desire." The selection of the condemned person, and thus the meal, falls entirely within Mr. Kneale's purview. There are no special requests, or substitutions. "Usually if people request something specific, I just don't do it. ... They're missing the point, it's not about ordering what you feel like having, it's more like, 'Here's what somebody had.' " Mr. Kneale, who studied art history and studio art at the Universiteit Van Amsterdam and the University of Toronto, which he graduated from in June, launched the project in mid-July by posting an ad for the service on his website. Since then, he has compiled and ferried approximately a dozen meals to a clientele consisting mainly of "young, white, educated men".
