UZBEKISTAN. EU CALLS ON TASHKENT TO ABOLISH DEATH PENALTY

the European Union called on the Uzbek government to abolish the death penalty, European Commission Deputy Director General for External Relations Michael Leigh told a press conference in Tashkent.

EU member-countries had abolished the death penalty and the EU invited all partners to do so, Leigh said. The EU was glad that Uzbekistan was progressing in the same direction, he said. The European Commission delegation had asked the Uzbek authorities to announce a moratorium on the death penalty until it was abolished.
