the Vatican demanded that former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein not be sentenced to death.
"Don't sentence Saddam to death", said Cardinal Paul Poupard, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture.
"The right to life is a universal principle, and there is no exception," Cardinal Poupard said. The Catholic Church and the Pope deem that "God is master of life and death" and "no one can claim any right over the life and death of another".
