William Raymond Mayes, once sentenced to death in the Nov. 19, 1987 murder of Phillip Trammell, has received a life sentence after a new sentencing trial. District Judge George Lindley sentenced the man to life without parole. Mayes' original death sentence was struck down by federal courts.
