With President Fidel Castro presiding, Cuban lawmakers unanimously approved an expanded antiterrorism law that reaffirmed the use of the death penalty for the most extreme acts of terror.
The new law toughens and expands Cuba's previous terrorism law, listed as a crime against the state in the nation's penal code. The previous law also called for death penalty in extreme cases.
"Without any doubt, I have not the slightest doubt, about the death penalty as an appropriate punishment in terrorism cases," Castro said during discussion of the law.
The law identifies terrorist crimes as actions that include explosive devices, chemical or biological agents or actions that involve other substances or methods, according to Jose Luis Toledo, the president of the Assembly's congressional law and institutional affairs committee.
