Xiong Xudong, a 22-year-old migrant worker, was sentenced to death by a court in Guangdong, China, for the murder of a Taiwanese businessman, his pregnant mainland mistress, her son and their domestic helper.
Xiong allegedly broke into the home of Chang Chien Yung-kun at an upmarket housing estate in Humen, Dongguan, intending to rob the occupants. Xiong needed money to repay a gambling debt and fund construction of a house in his home town, the court heard. Xiong climbed onto a balcony of the two-storey house late one night in November 2004 and broke in but found nothing to steal upstairs. The break-in disturbed the family's live-in nanny, Ao Zhi, who was then killed. The noise awoke Chang Chien, 43, and his girlfriend Xu Manli. Enraged when Xu offered him a handbag containing just 700 yuan, Xiong cut Chang Chien's throat with a kitchen knife, then slashed him and Xu, 34, to death. After that Xiong returned to the nanny's room and, taking a belt, strangled Xu's five-year-old son, Xu Zhongyuan, who had been hiding under the bed. Xiong fled with 11,000 yuan in cash and two mobile phones. Decorators discovered the murders the following afternoon.
