Yao Ruihua, Xu Weiguo and Nie Shaowen, convicted of murder and robbery, were executed on the orders of the Shanghai Higher Court. It was reported that after being fired by a branch store of Lianhua Supermarket, Yao tried to steal from the store in September, but ended up strangling the manager to death when he was recognised by him. Xu, after finding out that his wife was having an affair with another man, hit her and his son on the head with a hammer on August 17, 2001. The victims died of brain injury and loss of blood. In March 1999, Nie was involved in a bloody fight near Yiwu Railway Station in Zhejiang Province, "in which rifles, kitchen knives and iron sticks were used freely," the report said. One person died and five were injured in the fight.
