2nd WORLD DAY FOR THE MORATORIUM ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

There are lots of ways in which every year thousands of people are executed ‘in the name of justice’. A year after the initiative “The Coliseum Illuminates Life” was launched, the Rome City Council together with the non-governmental organisations Amnesty International, the Saint Egidio Community and Hands Off Cain, has promoted the second edition of The World Day For The Moratorium On Capital Punishment.
The demonstration is organised by Network - International Communications Society with the collaboration of the Italian Buddhist Institute, Soka Gakkai and will be held on Thursday 21st December around the main hall of the faculty of economics at the University of Tor Vergata.
Since the initiative “The Coliseum Illuminates Life” began, on December 12, 1999, the ancient monument synonymous with Rome has been lit up every time a State decided to impose a moratorium on executions or abolish the death penalty, or when an execution was suspended or a death sentence commuted. The lights burned gold for sixteen times in 2000.
