612 military men were convicted in Armenia in 2001, of whom 20% were officers. Military Prosecutor Gagik Jangiryan said three military men were sentenced to death for premeditated murder under aggravating circumstances.
The convicts killed eigth people, including one three-year old child, two civilians, two militia men and three servicemen, after leaving their military unit without permission and stealing 2 submachine guns and 18 full magazines.
Most of the other convicts were prosecuted for leaving their military units without permission, for fleeing military service, for abusing their office and for hazing newcomers. Eleven soldiers were also convicted of premeditated murder.
