A 53-year-old woman English woman from Chelmsford has met a 28-year-old killer on Ohio's death row.
Sue Morhall says that Lee Moore has become almost like a son to her in the three years they have been exchanging letters.
Now she is campaigning for an end to the US system which, she says, sends Lee and others like him to their deaths. Moore was sentenced to death eight years ago after he shot and killed a man during a robbery to obtain money for drugs.
He is currently on his third appeal against the sentence and may have another four years before facing death by lethal injection. Morhall attributes his crime to rebellion against a religious mother which led Lee to abuse drugs.
He is fully aware of the heinous crime he committed and has thrown himself into self-discovery, she said.
Morhall began writing to Moore through Lifelines, a non-campaigning, political organisation, but is now campaigning as an individual against the death penalty.
