A bi-partisan group of Senators and Representatives released the results of a 802 voters poll by Peter Hart Research and American Viewpoint showing: 64% of Americans support a moratorium on executions until issues of fairness in capital punishment can be resolved; 89% support providing access to DNA evidence in capital cases; 83% support providing qualified, experienced attorneys in capital cases; 55% said it is not enough to require DNA testing without ensuring access to competent counsel. The poll also found that the number of Americans who support capital punishment has dropped to 60% with 21% against and 19% undecided. Congressman William Delahunt, a former prosecutor from Massachusetts said: ''These survey results show that most Americans are now appalled at the prospect that we are executing innocent people''.
