A Broward jury voted 7-5 to recommend life in prison for Lawrence Lewis

A Broward jury voted 7-5 to recommend life in prison for Lawrence Lewis. Broward Circuit Judge Susan Lebow immediately imposed the sentence. This was the 2nd time a Broward jury had to decide whether Lewis, now 42, should spend his life in prison or be executed for the May 11, 1987 killing of Michael Gordon, 30. He was first convicted in 1988 and, by a 10-2 vote, the jury recommended death, a sentence that Broward Circuit Judge Stanton S. Kaplan imposed. The Florida Supreme Court upheld the conviction in 1990. But last year the Supreme Court ruled that Lewis should be granted a new sentencing hearing because his trial attorney, Richard Kirsch, did not adequately prepare for the penalty phase of the trial.
