A Chinese industrial trainee was sentenced to death by an appellate court in Seoul for two counts of murder and eight counts of robbery. The man, 24-year-old Wang Liwei, was the first foreigner to be sentenced to death. The Seoul High Court said in its verdict that Wang inflicted enormous suffering on his victims. "Taking into account the nature of the crimes, the lower court's death sentence is not deemed harsh," the court said.Although the defence claimed Wang has a record of metal disease, psychiatric tests show that his depression was not serious enough to affect his judgment, the court said.Wang was indicted for robbery and murder on 10 occasions on the streets of Ansan, Kyonggi Province, including one in which he raped and murdered a 24-year-old woman who was returning home in April 2000.
