A criminal court in Alexandria sentenced to death Ali Metwali, a 27- year-old carpenter, who choked and stabbed to death his would-be mother-in-law, 40-year-old Mahasen Ahmed Sanad, then stole her jewellery estimated at 8,000 Egyptian pounds (2,300 U.S. dollars). Metwali was arrested in October 1999. He admitted committing the crime because he was in dire need of money as Mahasen pressured him to provide more financial support for the upcoming marriage with her daughter. Most people sentenced to death in Egypt are hanged in prisons.
