A Dallas County jury recommended death by lethal injection for Joseph Garcia in the Christmas Eve 2000 slaying of Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins.
The panel found Garcia guilty last week.
Garcia was 29 when he and six other inmates escaped on Dec. 13, 2000, from the Connally Unit in Kenedy. Garcia was serving 50 years for murder.
Three other escapees, George Rivas, Donald Newbury and Michael Rodriguez, were convicted previously for Hawkins' murder and were sentenced to death.
One escapee, Larry Harper, killed himself as law enforcement officers moved in on a trailer where the 7 escapes had been staying.
The last 2 escapees, Randy Halprin and Patrick Murphy, are expected to be tried in Dallas County later this year.
