Monty Delk, 35, was executed for the murder of Gene Olan "Bubba" Allen II in November 1986. He was pronounced dead at 7:53 p.m. CST. Delk's execution was delayed more than an hour while the U.S. Supreme Court considered an 11th-hour appeal. Delk's lawyer, John Wright of Huntsville, contended Delk was too mentally ill to assist in his own defense and was incompetent to be executed. Delk becomes the 5th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas and the 12th condemned inmate to be put death this year in the USA.
