A Dubai court in the United Arab Emirates, sentenced four Indians to death for the murder of a well-known Indian businessman who was reportedly gunned down in broad daylight in a reported gangland revenge killing. Amar Bahadur Bam, 26, Karasingh Mansingh, 30, Manoj Mudanna Kotian, 32, and Vimal Kumar Ram, 26, were handed down the death penalty for killing 47-year-old Sharad Shetty in January, Gulf News said.
A fifth defendant, Vasa Kiwat Buhamen, 26, was sentenced to three years in jail followed by deportation for "aiding and abetting the crime," while a sixth defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence, the daily said.
The victim, who was reputed to have been close to the Bombay underworld, headed a chain of hotels in the United Arab Emirates.
Senior police officers had earlier indicated that his murder was a revenge killing ordered and engineered by an Indian gangster based in Thailand, the newspaper said.
