Lahu Dhekane was sentenced to death by an Additional and Sessions Court in Pune, India, for the 4 July 2003 abduction, and eventual murder, of Amit Sonawane, 13, from Nira. It was alleged that on the morning of the crime Amit had been on his way to school when Dhekane, a friend of the family, offered him a lift on his motorbike. Amit's father received a call the next morning, demanding payment for Amit's release. The police was contacted and a trap was set, Dhekane escaped but was eventually arrested in connection with another murder.
