A Florida court lifted the death sentence on a 63-year-old British businessman, Krishna Maharaj, who has spent 15 years in prison for a double murder that hundreds of supporters are convinced he did not commit.
In a resentencing his sentence was changed to life imprisonment. The path is now open for Maharaj to appeal against his original conviction and request a review of the evidence.
Before his arrest, Maharaj was a high-society figure who mixed with the Queen Mother on the horse-racing circuit and had a passion for collecting Rolls-Royces.One of his lawyers, Richard Bourke, said: "We are delighted at the decision of the jury, which now clears the road for Mr Maharaj to appeal his conviction in the federal courts."
Maharaj was convicted of the murder in 1986 of a Jamaican businessman and his son in a Miami hotel room. He had flown out to Florida to collect an outstanding debt from them, and his fingerprints were found at the scene at the crime.
However, there are many question marks over the case. Seven potential alibi witnesseses were never called to testify, a witness who said he saw Maharaj pull the trigger failed a lie-detector test, the victims were later found to be involved in drugs and money laundering and the original trial judge was arrested three days into the trial accused of accepting a bribe.
