A group of 56 lawmakers affiliated with the Korean branch of Amnesty International (AI) petitioned President Kim Dae-jung asking that prisoners currently awaiting execution have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. The lawmakers launched a signature drive campaign aimed at commuting the death sentences of 56 prisoners to life imprisonment in October last year as part of an international campaign to abolish the death penalty.
