A High Court Division Bench confirmed the death sentence imposed on Provat Chandra Haldar for killing his wife Swapna Sarkar for dowry on June 1, 1996, after only four days of marriage. Provat Chandra was tried in absentia. He had previously been condemned to death by the Special Judge on Women and Children Repression Prevention of the Barisal court on September 11, 1997.
