A July 2001 Harris Interactive survey found that: · 94% of Americans believe innocent people are sometimes convicted of murder · those surveyed believe that, on average, 12% of those convicted of murder are innocent · only 42% believe the death penalty deters crime; the smallest percentage in 25 years · 26% favor a decrease in executions, up from 14% in 1997 and 22% last year; the percent of those who would like to see executions increase has fallen to 35%, down from 53% in 1997 and 43% in 1999. Support for the death penalty is at 67%, up slightly from last year's 64%, but still down from 75% in 1997.
