A jury recommended James Lawrence Mitchell III, 28, be sentenced to death for the fatal beating of a 3-year-old girl. They also recommended Mitchell be sent to prison 2,000 years for injuring the girl's half-brother and sexually abusing her. District Judge Virgil Black read the jury's decision. Once outside the judge's chambers, Mitchell began laughing and said, "I can't do 2,000 years."
Jurors recommended a 1,000-year sentence on the child abuse conviction for injuring Kyree Anthony Rogers, then 5, and another 1,000 years for sexually abusing Charita Rashawn Frerene.
Mitchell was convicted of 1st-degree murder Tuesday for the July 23, 2000, beating death of Charita. His sentencing is set for Feb. 21.
Shawanda Nicole Rogers, 26, the children's mother, was convicted last year of first-degree murder and child abuse. She is serving a life sentence.
