A Labour MSP [Member of the Scottish Parliament] expressed "deep concern" at reports that a Scot had been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for alleged involvement in a bombing campaign.
Brian Fitzpatrick, MSP for Glasgow Strathkelvin and Bearsden, said officials were involved in continuing discussions with the Saudi government over the issue.
Newspaper reports said that one of his constituents, Alexander "Sandy" Mitchell, 44, from Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, had been sentenced to death after a summary trial without lawyers. In Saudi Arabia, execution is by beheading.
The reports said two other Britons had been secretly sentenced to 18 years in prison for alleged involvement in the bombing campaign.
But the men's lawyer said that a trial would take place in two weeks. The "sentences", he said, were probably only recommendations by the public prosecutor.
