A Lehigh County judge has granted a new trial and set aside a death sentence for a man who was convicted of setting a 1988 fire that killed his 3 children.Dennis Counterman, 41, did not get a fair trial in 1990 because the prosecution hid critical evidence from his public defenders, Judge Lawrence J. Brenner ruled today. The judge said the evidence, which the prosecution was required to turn over to Counterman's lawyers, could have helped the defence and could have cast "substantial doubt" on the credibility of the key prosecution witness, Counterman's wife, Janet.
