Social Development Minister Datuk S.Veerasingam said that the proposal to impose the death penalty on rapists needed in-depth study and feedback from all quarters before it could be implemented. Adding that rapists and sex offenders should receive heavy sentences to serve as a deterrent to others but the death penalty was not the only option."Some states in the United States which earlier imposed the death penalty have now repealed it and instead sentence offenders to life imprisonment," he told reporters.
