A Loya Jirga [assembly of elders] of North Waziristan tribesman at Ladha Tehsil ordered the execution of an Afghan accused of murder.
The Afghan was blindfolded and shot dead in public, at a football ground, by the father of the eleven-year-old boy he allegedly killed. Members of the Waziristan tribesmen committee, who formed a part of the jirga which had delivered the sentence apparently without even hearing the defendant, then shot repeatedly at the body with automatic weapons, while a crowd looked on.
The chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Afrasiab Khattak, said the execution marks a dangerous descent into a state of lawlessness.
"This is especially true given the fact that more and more jirgas have been operating recently in all parts of the country and meting out judgements that have no cover of law. It is clear too that these parallel judicial set ups can operate only with the connivance of the administration, which has consistently failed to take any action against them."
