The jury deliberated for about 2 hours before finding that 34-year-old Garza was not entitled to a lesser sentence for killing and robbing Silbiano Rangel in 1998.
Garza was convicted on 1 count of capital murder in 2000 for strangling the 71-year-old retired preacher and then stealing his truck, wallet and ring.
U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings in February found that important evidence included in Garza's juvenile record was omitted during the 1st trial.
The jury heard 4 days of testimony detailing physical and mental abuse Garza suffered as a child and the numerous criminal offenses his attorney said were committed as a result of that abuse.
