A man named Vali Hezar-Asb, from the Khavaran District of Tehran, was publicly hanged in a football field opposite the Khavaran cultural centre.
Before the hanging, a crowd of onlookers began chanting slogans and called on the family members of the victim to forgive the murderer. The crowd was chanting "O Husayn, O Zahra show clemency and forgive", calling on the father of the victim to show mercy. But the family members of the victim ignored them and demanded that the sentence should be carried out.
At this point some inhabitants of the area joined the relatives and friends of the murderer and began throwing sticks and stones towards the police and security forces. In return, the police threw tear-gas in order to control the crowd.
Vali Hezar-Asb had been charged and tried in Branch 1601 of Tehran's Criminal Court. He was charged with stabbing Behruz Vahhabian during some bloody fighting in Shahid Nabati Football Field, Khavaran District, in March 2001. His victim died after being stabbed by a knife several times. The execution was witnessed by over 2,000 people.
