a man was sentenced to death for killing and robbing a Taiwanese woman in May 2007. The verdict was announced by Shanghai's No 1 Intermediate People's Court. Passed last month, it is pending approval from the State Supreme Court. Mao Chuanhao, 22, from Anhui province, followed Chen Yijun, a 30-year-old woman with a garment business in Shanghai, on the night of May 10 as she was heading home. Chen was walking along Anlong Road in the downtown's Changning district when Mao attacked her. He tried to snatch Chen's purse but she fought back. Mao then stabbed Chen on the neck and chest with a switchblade and fled with the purse, leaving Chen in a pool of blood. Chen was already dead when she was found at 12:20 am. Mao was arrested on June 5 in Beijing. He was brought back to Shanghai and confessed to the homicide.
