a man who allegedly murdered his brother at Guabuliga, near Walewale in the Northern Region of Ghana, and ate part of his flesh, was sentenced to death by hanging. Supervising High Court judge Mr Justice Lauren Mensah of the Tamale High Court handed out the sentence after the 25-year-old farmer, Amadu Osumanu, told the court that he had been compelled to cut off and eat the flesh of his 50-year-old brother, Alhassan Osumanu, because the deceased had supernatural powers that could have haunted him after the murder. The facts of the case were that on May 24, 2008 the convict and the deceased, both farmers, went to their farms but they had not returned as of 6 p.m. that day. As a result, one of their siblings who had returned from his farm became worried and looked for his missing brothers. He found his brother’s body covered with leaves and stones. His two arms and the genitalia had been removed. Around the same time, the other group of elders interrogated Osumanu, who admitted having committed the offence. When he was further interrogated about the genitals, he removed a black plastic bag from his pocket and showed the police a penis and testicles which had apparently been chopped off the deceased's body.
