a Cape Coast High Court in Ghana sentenced a woman, Adjoa Badu, believed to be in her early fifties, to death for poisoning her husband and his other wife.
Kwame Saah, a farmer, died upon reaching hospital, while Ama Sekyiwaa was treated and discharged.
The court, presided over by Supervising High Court Judge, Justice Erasmus Gyinae, upheld the jurors' unanimous decision that the woman be sentenced to death. She was asked to choose between hanging, torture and lethal injection, but she refused to choose.
Adjoa and Kwame were married for seven years, but have no children. She had a quarrel with Adjoa, during which he called her a hopeless woman. Adjoa was already harbouring hatred because Kwame did not fulfill his promise to divorce Ama, his first wife. So Adjoa Badu prepared a supper (fufu and palm nut soup) sprinkled the poison. Adjoa Badu was later arrested, and confessed during police interrogation.
The defence noted that an autopsy report indicated that no poison was found in the belly of Kwame Saah and would soon file an appeal.
