A man who was convicted of raping his 8-year-old stepdaughter was sentenced to death. The man, whose identity was not released to protect his victim, was convicted of aggravated rape Monday for an attack that occurred 5 years ago. After nearly 2 hours of deliberations Tuesday, the same jury sentenced him to death. Under a Louisiana law adopted in 1995, the death penalty can be sought for aggravated rape if the victim is under the age of 12. The other penalty is a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Dr. Scott Benton, an expert on child sex abuse, told jurors that the girl's injuries were the worst he had seen resulting from sexual assault. The girl was attacked on March 2, 1998.
