A Newspoll published in The Australian found that 56 per cent of respondents want the death sentence reintroduced for barbaric acts of terrorism. While 40 per cent of those surveyed described themselves as strongly in favour of the death penalty, 36 per cent said they opposed capital punishment. Just 23 per cent described themselves as strongly opposed to the reintroduction of the death penalty, even for terrorism-related crimes. Among Coalition voters, 64 per cent backed the death penalty compared with 57 per cent of Labour supporters. Backing for the death penalty was also stronger among males (60 per cent) than among women (53 per cent). Blue-collar workers gave 66 per cent backing for the death penalty compared with just under half of professional workers, the poll in the Australian found. Fifty-seven per cent of those surveyed backed the death penalty for those found guilty of the Bali bombings while 33 per cent were opposed to the sentence handed to Amrozi.
