A policeman who served as a bodyguard to Malaysia's king was sentenced to death for what prosecutors called the jealousy-fuelled murder of a teenage pop singer.
Lance Corporal Mohamed Ya'cob Demyati, 36, was convicted of killing Sabi'ul Malik Shafiee, 19, the lead singer of Malaysian boyband Spoon, on December 26, 1999.
Police found the remains of the singer, whose stage name was Along, in a sack dumped in a ravine by a road nearly two weeks later. He had been strangled.
Prosecutors said Mohamed Ya'cob suspected that Sabi'ul was having an affair with his wife, who worked for a Malaysian record company. Mohamed Ya'cob denied it, saying he had no problems with his wife. The death penalty is mandatory for murder, but most are commuted to life imprisonment.
"Despite whatever has happened, I still love my husband. My feelings have not changed for the man I married," his wife Salina Ali said after the death sentence.
"While I accept the judgment as fated, I will continue to pray that he walk out a free man...one of these days," the mother of three said.
Ya'cob's counsel Markhan Singh said he would file an appeal as soon as possible.
