A poll conducted by the CVVM polling agency revealed that 56 per cent Czechs are in favour of the restoration of the death penalty. Compared to a similar survey conducted a year ago, the figure has fallen by two percent. In the early 1990s the idea was approved of by some three quarters of Czechs. The figure plummeted by 1995 and it remained at a steady 64-67 percent until 1999. Another decline was registered in 2000, when 60 percent of Czechs were for capital punishment. The decline is continuing, but the percentage of those with no opinion grows as well. The Death penalty is mostly supported by people over 45, with poor living standards and voters of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. It is frequently rejected by people with higher education, those with good living standards, residents of South Moravia and followers of the Christian Democrats and the Freedom Union. The figure is also lower among those under 20 and voters of the Civic Democratic Party.
