A Qatar appeals court condemned to death Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Hamad Al Thanin, a cousin of the country's emir, and 18 other defendants for their role in a foiled 1996 coup, overturning a lower court ruling giving the plotters life sentences.
The verdicts, read by the head of a panel of judges, said the condemned would be hanged or executed by firing squad.
Qatar's Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani has the power to commute death sentences.
The defendants were tried on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit treason and armed rebellion. All denied the charges.
